Losing weight with minimal effort sounds like a win- win situation. But are liquid diets too good to be true? Weight Loss Program How to Lose Weight. There are many reasons why you might want to lose weight. If you have been significantly overweight or obese for a long time, then you might have. What Are Liquid Diets? Like the name suggests, liquid diets mean you're getting all, or at least most, of your calories from drinks. Some liquid diets are limited to fruit or vegetable juices, or shakes, that replace all of your meals, taken three or four times a day. You do some of these diets on your own. Others need medical supervision. Other types of liquid diets replace just one or two meals (usually breakfast and lunch) with drinks, and then you eat a healthy dinner. You may also get snacks on some of these plans. Do Liquid Diets Work? Liquid diets can work, like any diet that gives you fewer calories than you use. These diets also can help by taking the guesswork out of portion control. But the results may not last. When you drastically cut calories, your metabolism slows to save energy. Unless you change your eating habits, you're likely to regain the weight you lost after you go off the liquid diet. Some liquid diets work better over the long term than others. Diets that include both solid food and liquids can be an effective and convenient way for overweight people to control the number of calories they eat. How Safe Are Liquid Diets? Ideally, liquid diet drinks should give you a balance of nutrients you need throughout the day, but that isn't always the case. Very low- calorie diets (4. Missing out on essential nutrients can lead to side effects such as fatigue, dizziness, hair loss, gallstones, and heart damage. Also, if you don't get enough fiber, because you're not eating whole grains, fruits and vegetables, you can get constipated. You also can lose muscle if you don't get enough protein calories in your diet. Are Liquid Diets Used for Medical Purposes? Doctors sometimes recommend liquid diets before certain medical procedures, or for people who are obese and need to get to a safer weight before having surgery, including weight loss surgery. Those liquid diets are medically supervised. Continued. How Can I Safely Get on a Liquid Diet? First, talk to your doctor about whether a liquid diet is appropriate for you. Pregnant or nursing women, and people who take insulin for diabetes, or anyone with a chronic illness shouldn't go on a liquid diet. If your doctor gives you the OK to go on a liquid diet, you should also see a registered dietitian, who can go over the diet with you and make sure you're getting enough calories and nutrition. Your dietitian might recommend that you take a vitamin or nutritional supplement while you're on the liquid diet. Before you choose a liquid diet plan, know what you're drinking. If you're considering one of the commercial diets, look at the daily values on the nutrition facts label. Be sure you're getting 1. You may also want to pick a diet that is not too low in calories and contains plenty of protein and fiber to keep you feeling full while you lose the weight gradually. Liquid diets that include a solid meal or two per day, or that teach you healthier eating habits, will be more likely to help you keep the weight off in the long run. Web. MD Medical Reference. Scarlet’s turnaround (Autism & Paleo)Unless you have been in an Angry Birds Coma for the past year you might have heard this Paleo Diet concept is pretty powerful at reversing a host of problems. I’ve been learning about this topic for 1. I’m continually amazed not only at how powerfully good nutrition and lifestyle changes can affect health, but also the variety of issues that can be addressed. Unless you have even less of a soul than John Welbourn (just kidding, John probably has a soul) the following story will likely tighten your chest up a bit. I know it did and does for me and for a very simple reason: A child’s life was completely changed for the better, in many ways saved. The concept of “gluten free” is making it’s way into the collective consciousness of many people in the autism community, but unfortunately that is only one of many steps necessary to really affect change in this condition. This will be made obvious by the accompanying commentary Dr. Mat Lalonde (Aka- “The Kraken”) provides after his experience speaking at an autism research conference. Thank you to Rachael for sharing Scarlet’s story, and to The Kracken for taking the time to comment on this piece. If you know someone with kids who suffer from autism, please pass this along. My name is Rachel, and I am a 3. I have been interested in fitness and nutrition for years, but followed a traditional bodybuilding diet until I began having stomach pain when I became pregnant with my fourth baby in 2. Suddenly, a protein shake or other foods gave me unbearable stomach pain within 2. Sometimes this was even accompanied my vomiting, and got bad enough that I landed in the ER a few times. None of the doctors seemed to know what it was. They guessed lactose intolerance or IBS and sent me home. At 2. 2 weeks pregnant, I awoke in the middle of the night with the worst abdominal pain yet, and a fever. We went to the ER, and they rushed me into emergency surgery to remove what they thought could be an appendix about to rupture. This was scary and risky at 2. The surgeon discovered that my appendix was fine, but that I had a cyst in my small intestine which had ruptured causing the infection and fever. I asked tons of questions. What caused this? Could it happen again? All of the doctors said they didn’t really know. A nurse told me to try cutting out wheat and see if that helped. It did, but I did not yet know why or how it helped. My daughter Scarlet was born full term and healthy, and we breathed a sigh of relief. We knew early on Scarlet was different than our other 3 children. She seemed less affectionate and inclined to “stay in her own little world.” She was walking at 9 months, but had not even begun to speak after turning a year old. By the time she was 1. I mean ALL THE TIME) and pacing or rocking all the time. She carried around objects refusing to put them down for any reason at all, and freaked out if people came too close to her. She was notoriously unaffectionate. Hugs and kisses were very rare. We took her to speech therapists, neurologists, and child psychologists. They diagnosed her with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in September of 2. Her language skills at 2. She had no words at all. I started researching everything I could find about diet. I got Robb’s book The Paleo Solution for Christmas and read it all in 2 days. Then I read it again. This all made so much sense to me! For starters, I tried to get as much gluten out of my family’s diet as I could, but many people around me were skeptical, to say the least. I was met with a lot of resistance. Even though I had been eating this way myself for almost a year and the allergies, asthma, and eczema that had plagued me my whole life DISAPPEARED, and I lost 5. Scarlet improved a little bit with less wheat in her diet, and had about a five word vocabulary within a few months. She was still eating dairy and other grains at this point, and family was still sneaking her some cookies and such at this point. I had begun reading for a couple hours a day on nutrition for several months, and I decided to attend a Paleo Solution Seminar in Toronto in March, 2. Robb explained gut health, auto- immunity, the blood- brain barrier, and “brainflammation.” This was what really made the “gut- autoimmune” connection click for me. I came home determined, and tortured my husband with hours of biochemistry (I am a closet science nerd) until he agreed we had to go 1. Paleo and give this thing a shot. I no longer cared if everyone around me thought I was nuts. I knew my daughter had ZERO wiggle room, and I threatened physical harm if anyone tried to “sneak the poor baby a cookie.” I began feeding her grass- fed meat, wild salmon, yams, carrots, berries, and the like. Instead of milk and juice she has caffeine free herbal tea or coconut milk with water. To my surprise, she LOVES this food and I had no trouble getting her to eat this way. I hoped that over time, this would improve her condition. I WAS WRONG. It was much better than that! Within ONE WEEK of Scarlet eating 1. Before paleo, Scarlet said about 5 words. One week after paleo, she is using more than 2. It has now been two weeks on paleo and we cannot keep up with the word explosion! She can repeat most things she hears. She is pointing to objects and naming them, something she couldn’t do before. She is calling us “mama” and “dada” and we are getting all the big hugs and kisses we can handle! She can point out a couple of shapes and colors and name them. She identifies animals and the sounds they make. This FAR exceeds her goals for learning for the whole year set by her therapists. Her teacher and speech therapist cannot believe it either, but they are totally on board and even asked for info about Robb’s book and website, which I gave them. We are so thankful for Robb and others like him who are getting this information out to families like ours. This is life- changing information you most likely won’t hear from doctors, government or media. Do your own research, and be skeptical. Check the source, follow the money, and do your best to understand the actual science. If you try going paleo, don’t cave to people who are afraid you (or your kids) will wither away or die of malnutrition without bread, milk and cereal! If you actually DO this stuff, YOU will be the proof. Words From The Kraken. I had been meaning to give a nutrition seminar in Boston for quite some time so I was ecstatic when Nathan Rosenberg (Harvard Food Law Society) and Michal Naisteter (Paleo Meet- up group in Boston) asked me to lecture in Harvard’s Langdell Hall on March 5th 2. One of the attendees, an architect by the name of Todd Fix, contacted me via email after the seminar and mentioned that he would petition for my participation in an upcoming autism conference. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of the comment so I didn’t reply and eventually forgot about it. I was later contacted by Pamela Ferro; a registered nurse who works with autistic children. Pamela said she had talked to Todd and watched an online video of my seminar at the Academy of Lions. She asked if I would be willing to speak alongside Martha Herbert, Alessio Fasano, and herself at a conference organized by the Gottschall Autism Center on April 1st. Is this an April fool’s prank?” She was dead serious. As I chatted with Pamela, it eventually became clear why she invited me to speak at the conference. Pamela was an acquaintance of Elaine Gottschall, a biochemist who implemented the specific carbohydrate diet created by Dr. Haas in order to help her autistic daughter. As a result of her relationship with Elaine and her experience working with autistic children (including her own), Pamela was well informed on the topics of digestion, dysbiosis, and intestinal permeability. She mentioned that dysbiosis and the presence of parasites in the gut, which results in chronic bouts of diarrhea, are common in autistic children. After reading up on the specific carbohydrate diet, it became clear that some of the information contained in my presentation regarding the effect of seed consumption (grains, legumes, nuts, edible seeds) on intestinal permeability could be used to complement the SCD and improve the already impressive results observed with autistic children. The Gottschall conference was cleverly entitled “When the Belly is the Beast” and focused on the interplay between gut health and autism. As such, it made perfect sense to invite Alessio Fasano; one of the world’s leading researchers in gut pathology and celiac disease. Fasano highlighted the similarities between autoimmune diseases and autism during his lecture. The same study also showed normalization of intestinal permeability upon implementation of a gluten- and casein- free (GFCF) diet. Although the GFCG diet was successful in this context, the results of previously published control trials are mixed. This would indeed increase the odds of success but, in my opinion, what needs to be changed is the diet, not the population. The mixed results of the controlled trials are due to the diets that were employed, many of which merely replaced wheat, rye, barley and dairy with other grains, pseudo- cereals, and legumes. The diets are so poorly designed it is surprising that positive results have been observed at all. Ideally, the diets should be free of all grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, eggs, nightshades, and dairy. Meat, organs, fat and bone broth from grass- fed and/or pastured and/or wild caught animals should be eaten exclusively for a few weeks or until behavioral improvements are observed. Cooked vegetables can then be introduced, followed by fruits like avocados, coconut, olives, and palm. Finally, cooked tubers can be reintroduced into the diet while behavior is closely monitored. I plan on working with Pamela to determine the effectiveness of the aforementioned approach. I think the number of questions I received from parents and nurses at the Gottschall conference indicates that people are starting to take the autism- gut health connection seriously. Three Major Reasons to Feed Your Pet a Homemade Diet. By Dr. Becker. Listen as Dr. Karen Becker discusses the advantages of feeding the pets in your family a healthy, wholesome diet prepared right in your own kitchen for a fraction of the cost of high end commercial pet food. Have you ever wondered what, exactly, is in that can or bag of pet food you’re serving your beloved four- legged family member every day? If so, you’re not alone. In my experience, the number one reason pet parents look into homemade diets for Fluffy or Fido is because they’re concerned about quality. What’s really in that giant bag of dry dog kibble or that tiny can of food your kitty seems addicted to? Commercial Pet Food is Loosely Regulated. You may not be aware that unlike the food you eat, there’s very little government regulation of pet food quality. The USDA doesn’t control it, nor does the FDA or the AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials). Not one of these agencies watches over what private pet food manufacturers put in their products. Grain Brain (2013) is a book that describes how to improve your brain health and reduce the risk of brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and conditions such. Optimize your health, your weight, and your energy to improve your health and avoid premature. Diet of Chinese water dragons, pinkie, fuzzie, fish, live rodents, common food items, ratio's, vitamin, mineral, supplements. Read doctor-produced health and medical information written for you to make informed decisions about your health concerns.
Pet food quality control is governed by each state, and while certain regulatory codes exist, they do not pertain to the absorbability, digestibility or overall quality of commercially prepared foods for pets. What this all means is you must place your trust in the companies that make the pet food you buy, and you have to count on the accuracy of the labels on the packaging as well. For many people - - especially those of you who’ve had a bad experience feeding commercial foods to your dog or cat - - this is just not good enough. Even the pet food brands many veterinarians endorse don’t live up to their marketing claims and have caused health problems in pets. Given the lack of regulation and the questionable quality of many commercial pet foods, more and more dog and cat owners have become leery of serving them to their furry family members. This is not to say there aren’t good quality pet foods on the market, but many people have simply lost trust in the pet food industry and are eager to learn how to make their own pet food at home. The Biggest Drawback to Feeding Homemade. As an integrative wellness veterinarian who understands the vital connection between nutrition and health, I applaud all pet parents who make the commitment to prepare and feed only a homemade diet to their pets. But here’s the rub – if you’re going the homemade route, you must do it right. And by right, I mean balanced. A growing problem in my practice is pets with compromised health as the result of being fed an unbalanced homemade diet. Even with the best intentions, if you switch your dog or cat to an unbalanced homemade diet, you can do a great deal of damage to their health – which is exactly what you are trying to avoid by serving homemade in the first place. I’ll discuss how to avoid this pitfall shortly. Human Grade Food: It’s Not Just for Humans. Unless the commercial dog or cat food you’re buying is made with human- grade ingredients, you are feeding your pet rendered protein. Rendered meat is essentially pieces and parts of this animal or that - - there’s really no telling. This low quality protein is less than desirable nutrition for your pet. Unfortunately, commercial pet food made entirely with human- grade ingredients is usually at least three times as expensive as food containing crude protein. This is one of the main reasons for switching your pet to a homemade diet. You have complete control over what goes into your dog’s or cat’s mouth, and you can insure you’re feeding high quality, human- grade protein and not the crude, pieces- and- parts variety. Get the Grain Out. Another reason to consider feeding a balanced homemade diet is that you can insure it is species- appropriate for your pet. Many pet owners today are becoming more knowledgeable about what constitutes biologically correct nutrition for companion animals. For example, many of you realize your carnivorous dog or kitty should not be fed carbohydrates like grain, corn, wheat, rice, and in particular, soy. Canines and felines have no biological grain requirement and dogs, in particular, can have problems digesting grains, so I don’t recommend feeding them to your pets. Depending on where you live, you might already know just how difficult it can be to find commercially available pet foods that are: Grain- free Made from human- grade ingredients Affordable This is another reason increasing numbers of pet owners are looking into homemade diets – it can be less expensive and less frustrating than trying to find affordable, high quality commercial pet food. Additives and Preservatives. The vast majority of commercial pet foods on the market contain chemicals, preservatives, emulsifiers and artificial colors that pet parents don’t want to subject their animals to. Even high end commercial brands use flavor enhancers and extra fats that make the food more palatable to your dog or cat, but also less healthy. Other Benefits of Homemade Pet Food. We’ve already covered some of the advantages of preparing homemade meals for your dog or cat, including: You have complete control over the ingredient list and the ability to eliminate all additives and preservatives You can pick just the right veggies for your pet’s particular needs, including those with higher antioxidant or medicinal properties, for example You can decide which meat sources to feed your pet, which is especially important if you have a cat or dog with an allergy to certain types of protein Another benefit of switching to homemade is you can save money by buying large quantities of meats and vegetables when they are on sale. You can prepare, package and freeze your homemade pet meals weeks or even months ahead of time. You can also pair up with friends who have pets to buy ingredients in even larger quantities. It can be both economical and a time saver if you can spread the expense and meal prep work among the entire group. Another wonderful benefit of preparing a homemade diet is that when you follow a recipe for balanced meals, which is what I’m about to recommend, you’ll know for a fact you’re doing the best job possible in nourishing your pet. You’ll be: Fulfilling your dog’s or cat’s vibrant, living food requirement Providing nutrient balanced, species- appropriate food that is rich in omega fatty acids and contains vitamin- mineral supplements in the correct proportions Real Food for Healthy Dogs & Cats. Together with my pet lifestyle coach and pet nutrition consultant , Beth Taylor, I’ve written a book of homemade pet food recipes, Real Food for Healthy Dogs & Cats. Another great thing about Real Food for Healthy Dogs & Cats is if the thought of preparing food for your pet is intimidating, we’ve provided easy- to- follow, balanced recipes that even a complete novice can handle. There’s a chapter on how to select healthy treats for your pet. There’s also a chapter on how to incorporate commercially prepared raw foods into a homemade diet. For pet parents who want to prepare balanced, species- appropriate meals but aren’t ready for raw, there are recipes for cooked homemade diets as well. Beyond food preparation, our book shows you how to create essential vitamin- mineral mixes from products you can purchase from your local health food store. We explain how to blend supplements in appropriate quantities and then add them to each batch of homemade food in the right amounts for your pet’s body weight. Vitamin- mineral supplementation coupled with homemade food allows you to prepare meals for your pet that are nutritionally complete in accordance with all standards for suggested baseline requirements. Beth and I are proud to be able to offer our book to you. There are few things as fulfilling as knowing you’re preparing nutrition packed, species appropriate homemade meals for your dog or cat right in your own kitchen. Wrist Weights for Tremors . About 1. 0 million people suffer from tremors, according to the Tremor Foundation. While your head and voice may also be affected by tremors, your hands are most likely to fall prey to these involuntary synchronizations of the muscles. Essential tremor, the most common type, stems from a neurological disorder unrelated to any disease. Illnesses that may cause tremors include Parkinson's disease, metabolic disorders, toxicity from heavy metals or alcohol withdrawal. Wrist weights may alleviate tremors but could also worsen them, so check with your physician before pursuing this form of treatment. Because medications prescribed to treat tremors may cause unwanted side effects, your doctor may recommend alternative treatments like weight belts. Wrist weights . Goroll and Albert G. You should not rely on wrist weights alone to relieve tremors, according to information provided by the Johns Hopkins Medicine website. Although weighing down your limbs may prove helpful, few patients can function normally using this form of treatment alone. A better approach, according to Johns Hopkins, includes combining wrist weight therapy with medication. Surgery may also prove advisable for some patients with tremors. Although wrist weight therapy may reduce your need for medication, do not stop taking medicine prescribed for your condition without consulting your physician. Wrist weights may provide relief from tremors but will not make them go away. Wrist weights may also do little to negate the frequency of tremors, according to Richard Tidball Johnson and Justin C. Mc. Arthur, authors of . The frequency of tremors is controlled by your brain. Wrist weight therapy can potentially worsen your tremors, particularly with prolonged use. Some patients who used wrist weights for long periods found that, after removing the weights, their tremors occurred more frequently, according to the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Center. Although wrist weight therapy may benefit you, seek the advice of your physician before applying the therapy to your condition. And follow your doctor's recommendation about how long to wear wrist weights to avoid potential drawbacks with this type of treatment for tremors. An inadequate or excessive amount of some nutrients may cause malformations or medical problems in the fetus, and neurological disorders and handicaps are a risk that is run by mothers who are malnourished. Daily prenatal use of iron substantially improves birth weight, potentially reducing the risk of Low birth weight. It should be taken as at least 0. Pregnant women should take prenatal vitamins containing iodine. While it was assumed that supplementation was necessary only in areas of high latitudes, recent studies of Vitamin D levels throughout the United States and many other countries have shown a large number of women with low levels. For this reason, there is a growing movement to recommend supplementation with 1. Vitamin D daily throughout pregnancy. Several studies have shown a small drop in preterm delivery and in low birth weight in mothers with higher intakes. Some other omega- 3 fatty acids not found in fish can be found in foods such as flaxseeds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and enriched eggs. It is also essential before pregnancy for the production of hemoglobin. There is no evidence that a hemoglobin level of 7 grams/1. According to the Cochrane review conclusions iron supplementation reduces the risk of maternal anaemia and iron deficiency in pregnancy but the positive effect on other maternal and infant outcomes is less clear. In addition, prenatal vitamins typically contain increased amounts of folic acid, iodine, iron, vitamin A, vitamin D, zinc, and calcium over the amounts found in standard multi- vitamins. The World Health Organisation does not routinely recommend zinc supplementation for pregnant women because there is not enough good quality evidence. This can include food pathogens and toxic food components, alcohol, and dietary supplements such as vitamin A and potentially harmful pathogens such as listeria, toxoplasmosis, and salmonella. Excessive amounts of alcohol have been proven to cause fetal alcohol syndrome. The World Health Organization recommends that alcohol should be avoided entirely during pregnancy, given the relatively unknown effects of even small amounts of alcohol during pregnancy. Pregnant women are advised to eat seafood in moderation. Folic acid governs the synthesis of the precursors of DNA, which is the nucleic acid that gives each cell life and character. Folic acid deficiency results in defective cellular growth and the effects are most obvious on those tissues which grow most rapidly. This means that hydration is an important aspect of nutrition throughout pregnancy. The European Food Safety Authority recommends an increase of 3. L per day compared to the normal intake for non- pregnant women, taking the total adequate water intake (from food and fluids) to 2,3. L, or approximately 1,8. L/ day from fluids alone. Women having serum ferritin less than 7. Human milk is made of 8. IOM recommends that breastfeeding women increase their water intake by about 3. When you have anemia, your blood doesn't have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to your tissues and to your baby. During pregnancy, your body produces more blood to support the growth of your baby. If you're not getting enough iron or certain other nutrients, your body might not be able to produce the amount of red blood cells it needs to make this additional blood. It's normal to have mild anemia when you are pregnant. But you may have more severe anemia from low iron or vitamin levels or from other reasons. Anemia can leave you feeling tired and weak. If it is severe but goes untreated, it can increase your risk of serious complications like preterm delivery. Here's what you need to know about the causes, symptoms, and treatment of anemia during pregnancy. Types of Anemia During Pregnancy. Several types of anemia can develop during pregnancy. These include: Here's why these types of anemia may develop: Iron- deficiency anemia. This type of anemia occurs when the body doesn't have enough iron to produce adequate amounts of hemoglobin. That's a protein in red blood cells. It carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. In iron- deficiency anemia, the blood cannot carry enough oxygen to tissues throughout the body. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia in pregnancy. Folate- deficiency anemia. Folate is the vitamin found naturally in certain foods like green leafy vegetables A type of B vitamin, the body needs folate to produce new cells, including healthy red blood cells. During pregnancy, women need extra folate. But sometimes they don't get enough from their diet. When that happens, the body can't make enough normal red blood cells to transport oxygen to tissues throughout the body. Man made supplements of folate are called folic acid. Folate deficiency can directly contribute to certain types of birth defects, such as neural tube abnormalities (spina bifida) and low birth weight. Vitamin B1. 2 deficiency. The body needs vitamin B1. When a pregnant woman doesn't get enough vitamin B1. Women who don't eat meat, poultry, dairy products, and eggs have a greater risk of developing vitamin B1. Blood loss during and after delivery can also cause anemia. Continued. Risk Factors for Anemia in Pregnancy. All pregnant women are at risk for becoming anemic. That's because they need more iron and folic acid than usual. But the risk is higher if you: Are pregnant with multiples (more than one child)Have had two pregnancies close together. Vomit a lot because of morning sickness. Are a pregnant teenager. Don't eat enough foods that are rich in iron. Had anemia before you became pregnant. Symptoms of Anemia During Pregnancy. The most common symptoms of anemia during pregnancy are: Pale skin, lips, and nails. Feeling tired or weak. Dizziness. Shortness of breath. Rapid heartbeat. Trouble concentrating. In the early stages of anemia, you may not have obvious symptoms. And many of the symptoms are ones that you might have while pregnant even if you're not anemic. So be sure to get routine blood tests to check for anemia at your prenatal appointments. Risks of Anemia in Pregnancy. Severe or untreated iron- deficiency anemia during pregnancy can increase your risk of having: A preterm or low- birth- weight baby. A blood transfusion (if you lose a significant amount of blood during delivery)Postpartum depression. A baby with anemia. A child with developmental delays. Untreated folate deficiency can increase your risk of having a: Preterm or low- birth- weight baby. Baby with a serious birth defect of the spine or brain (neural tube defects)Untreated vitamin B1. Tests for Anemia. During your first prenatal appointment, you'll get a blood test so your doctor can check whether you have anemia. Blood tests typically include: Hemoglobin test. It measures the amount of hemoglobin - - an iron- rich protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to tissues in the body. Hematocrit test. It measures the percentage of red blood cells in a sample of blood. If you have lower than normal levels of hemoglobin or hematocrit, you may have iron- deficiency anemia. Your doctor may check other blood tests to determine if you have iron deficiency or another cause for your anemia. Even if you don't have anemia at the beginning of your pregnancy, your doctor will most likely recommend that you get another blood test to check for anemia in your second or third trimester. Continued. Treatment for Anemia. If you are anemic during your pregnancy, you may need to start taking an iron supplement and/or folic acid supplement in addition to your prenatal vitamins. Your doctor may also suggest that you add more foods that are high in iron and folic acid to your diet. In addition, you'll be asked to return for another blood test after a specific period of time so your doctor can check that your hemoglobin and hematocrit levels are improving. To treat vitamin B1. B1. 2 supplement. The doctor may also recommend that you include more animal foods in your diet, such as: Your OB may refer you to a hematologist, a doctor who specializes in anemia/ blood issues. These specialist may see you throughout the pregnancy and help your OB manage the anemia. Preventing Anemia. To prevent anemia during pregnancy, make sure you get enough iron. Eat well- balanced meals and add more foods that are high in iron to your diet. Aim for at least three servings a day of iron- rich foods, such as: lean red meat, poultry, and fishleafy, dark green vegetables (such as spinach, broccoli, and kale)iron- enriched cereals and grainsbeans, lentils, and tofunuts and seedseggs. Foods that are high in vitamin C can help your body absorb more iron. These include: citrus fruits and juicesstrawberrieskiwistomatoesbell peppers. Try eating those foods at the same time that you eat iron- rich foods. For example, you could drink a glass of orange juice and eat an iron- fortified cereal for breakfast. Also, choose foods that are high in folate to help prevent folate deficiency. These include: leafy green vegetablescitrus fruits and juicesdried beansbreads and cereals fortified with folic acid. Follow your doctor's instructions for taking a prenatal vitamin that contains a sufficient amount of iron and folic acid. Vegetarians and vegans should talk with their doctor about whether they should take a vitamin B1. Sources. SOURCES: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists: . I have a co- worker who feeds raw chicken wings to her dog. I thought chicken bones could kill dogs. Is this safe? Chicken bones can and do kill dogs. All bones, whether raw or cooked, can potentially fracture teeth and block or tear the throat, stomach and intestines. Raw bones have additional risks that concern both veterinarians and public- health officials: foodborne pathogens such as salmonella. Bacteria such as this are a risk not only to the animals eating the diets, but for other pets and people in the household, particularly for the very young, very old and immunosuppressed. The risk isn't limited to raw meat, by the way, since the U. S. Food and Drug Administration warns that all pet food and treats need careful handling. Consider the Alternatives Many people now feed their dogs and cats what’s known as the BARF diet (for “bones and raw flesh” or “biologically appropriate raw food. These pet owners are generally well- educated people who are trying to do what’s best for their pets; however, their devotion to this style of feeding borders on religious zealotry in the minds of many veterinarians. As a veterinarian, I have a difficult time with the idea that a diet based on science and feeding trials could be so easily dismissed by pet owners who are so committed to their pet’s health. I have known many of the veterinary nutritionists working in the industry for many years, and I am comfortable with their work and their integrity. But I also know many intelligent pet owners who provide their animals with a home- prepared diet that includes raw, meaty bones. Talk to Your Vet I doubt that I will ever be completely comfortable with a raw diet, but I have no problem with people who want to maintain their pets on a home- prepared cooked diet in consultation with their veterinarian, preferably one that was vetted by a veterinary nutritionist. I just ask them to keep in mind that if they are not careful to research before they start and to source their ingredients carefully, they may end up with a diet that is not nutritionally balanced and, in the case of raw foods, contaminated with harmful bacteria. We just don’t know enough about all the possible formulations of home- prepared diets to say, hands down, that they are OK. The number of people who feed raw chicken bones (along with other raw muscle meats, organs and bones as part of a raw diet plan) and have perfectly healthy animals is no doubt proof that feeding a raw chicken bone to a dog is not the automatic death sentence many pet owners have long believed it to be. The science of pet nutrition is constantly evolving, though, and the debate on this issue remains a healthy one within the veterinary community. BARF Diet Advice For Dogs & Cats.
